Eating Out and Take Out – Healthy Options
It’s the holiday season and you may be eating out or take out while traveling or tired of cooking. Making healthy choices to maintain a wellness doesn’t have to be hard.
You can look up the restaurants in your area, to see which have healthy options that include farm-to-table, organic options or local farmers produce. I have found that small family run ethnic restaurants that need our support more than ever during this pandemic – offer healthy real whole food options.
For Fast food options try Mexican food like Qdoba or Chiptole, or small family restaurant or Middle Eastern food. I love, love, love Asian food from Thai to Vietnamese, Indian to Chinese (sauces may contain sugar!); ask or look up on the internet if the restaurant uses MSG. MSG can cause a sensitivity or allergic reaction, I get headache and anxious feelings.
As we eat cleaner and cleaner, you may notice that when you eat out you may have more of a reaction from the restaurant food. Pay attention to what restaurant may cause this reaction for you. Food and mood diary or journal can help you steer clear of these discomforts.
Eat your meal, don’t order desserts. Instead try 1 to 3 pieces of dark chocolate good quality bar or half hour after your meal have a fruit with nuts to satisfy the sweet tooth and not cause a blood sugar spike.
Another option while traveling is to bring your own meal with you. When I was in the Netherlands, we would go for a shopping trip to the bigger city. My European Aunt and cousin would have sandwiches and fruit packed for the day. We would stop for a coffee or drink at a cafe in europe but eat our food in the park. I loved this, and do this all the time now. Bring food when we are travelling so we can eat out less.
Ideas for this – overnight oats or granola and yoghurt for breakfast. Sliced uncured meats and goat cheeses with nut crackers. Veggies and hummus. Prepared or all the stuff to make sandwiches.
